A friend forwarded an excellent video of fun things that dogs do, with can-can music as a background.

My favourite parts were two spaniels that looked like they were doing the can-can in time with the music, followed by the great dane that tucked himself into bed, pulling up the blanket with his teeth.

I would have loved to post it here, but it had a watermark to a site that contained fairly rude pictures, so I had to leave it out.

But if you’re up for a laugh, just go to youtube and search for funny videos.

Beet pulp stops smelly farts?

I was just re-reading an old dogs magazine, and loved the ad on the inside page.

Apparently beet pulp helps doggies do firmer poos and less smelly farts. With the catch line that you won’t be able to blame the dog on smelly farts any more.

It was an ad for SuperCoat, apparently an all natural, Australian-made dog food. Of some kind.

The funny thing was that even though I went to the supercoat website, it wasn’t clear whether it was a dog treat, or meant as a dog meal. You can check it out yourself at SuperCoat and see what you think.

Regardless, they do have handsome ads in magazines, and a handsome website.

Hire a hound, when you’re away

Canada’s Fairmont Hotels now have a ‘fleet’of dogs that can be booked online and taken for walks. So if it’s bad enough that you had to leave your dog behind, but you still like to go for a walk and talk with a dog, you can now hire a hound at selected Fairmont Hotels in Canada.

I couldn’t find any mention of it on their site at www.fairmont.com, so you’ll have to contact them for details.

According to the Sun-Herald newspaper, this is available at Fairmont Chateau Ftontenac, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver.

They tend to be labradors or retrievers so far.

Barking Mad

I just heard about the Barking Mad website at http://barking-mad.com.au/index.php.

It’s run by Eedra Zey from the Central Coast, and is an organisation designed to promote responsible dog ownership (please pick up your poo!), and be a voice to gain rights for companion animals on transport, beaches and more.

There’s a cool newsletter (the first was January 2007), and some intriguing interaction with Warringah Council, when she took her dog for a picnic at Long Reef beach. Apparently there are no surf beaches in Sydney where a dog is permitted, most unusual in Australia. So we’re quite lucky in Mosman having access to the non-surf beaches at Spit Reserve and Sirius Cove (according to the Mosman Council website at http://www.mosman.nsw.gov.au/mosman/recreation/dogs

Dog and Owner Race

Today was the Balmoral Burn – a race up the steepest street in Mosman, to raise money for hospitals (see www.humpty.com.au) .

There was a category for pet and owner, although the majority were dogs, going by the names on the result list. And there’s a great picture at the website of dogs and their owners.

Somehow I think both Spike and I need some more training before going in the event next year – I had a go by myself, and ended up walking the last half. Pretty embarrassing.

Pet stain removal

A couple of tips for pet stain removal in the North Sydney Courier:

1. For mud, apply a small amount of white foam shaving cream. Leave for 1 minute, then blot. But test for colour fastness first.

2. Also for mud, you could leave it to dry overnight, then brush or vacuum it up.

3. For vomit, scoop up as much as you can first. Then sprinkle sale, and cover with a damp cloth. Leave for 2-3 hours, and the cloth should absorb most of the mess. Apparently this is particularly good for yellow bile stains.

Vet access to microchip data

The NSW government has finally given all veterinarians full access to the Companion Animals Register, so that when stray or injured pets are brought in, they can be scanned and owners contacted.

Previously only councils were supposed to scan chips and access the register.

This is excellent news for vets, as typically (and incorrectly), animals are often brought to the vet. After hours, when councils were closed, there was often no way of contacting the owner, if a proper tag was not worn.

Dog Day at Google

Congratulations to the Kirkland Washington office of Google for their first ever Dog Day, where workers could bring in their dogs to work.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/03/dog-day-at-kirkland.html describes the day these lucky dogs had – massage, acupressure, grooming, a dog whisperer, training, awards and a goody bag.

They probably didn’t need to call participants Dooglers though.

Dog Holidays

A first Australian dog holiday resort Split Solitary Beach Holiday Park has listed on the Dog Holidays page of www.mydogsite.com.au.

Taking advantage of the full-page listing, with colour photo and Google map, it’s a great way to advertise your dog holiday resort.

The Dog Holiday Search function lets you search for a place to holiday with dogs, with searches possible by any combination of state, region, suburb, property type, and whether it is fenced, if your dog can sleep inside, whether there’s a dog-friendly lake or beach nearby, and whether it’s wheelchair accessible.

I think it’s a great search function. Planned improvements include the ability to add comments and ratings, for all listings at the site.
